in action...

since i mention occasionally working (doing a bit of theatre or, in this case, a commercial) i thought i'd actually share the results of one of my latest gigs. i filmed two commercials in one week during April, so it felt different and fun to be working again for a change... i auditioned and was hired to head a local campaign to make Mother's Day a three-day weekend ("Give Mom a Monday.") They had a point - all the cool holidays get a monday off, whereas Mother's Day has to share all its fabulousness with your regularly-scheduled Sunday plans. I can get behind a bonus day off celebrating mom! the petition was sponsored by a downtown spa/salon, so we set up shop outside their storefront one saturday last month. then i was taped for 7 hours as i interacted with real people going about their business. i had a team of volunteers getting the actual signatures, so mostly i was taped instigating specific antics, and giving "testimonial" type shots to the camera. by the end of the day we were so exhausted and punchy that i was standing on an apple crate singing about mom's into a bullhorn. it was ridiculous, fun, crazy, and has made it's way onto You Tube: Gene Juarez Give Mom's a Monday it's always interesting for me to see what they choose to use in these scenarios. the ad is lovely, but i was disappointed upon first viewing thinking of all the fun things they weren't able to use. (more of the wacky stuff was left out, mostly. i like wacky.) so... there i am. in action, working to get us all a day off. i think if it had worked we would have heard about it by now, but you know... there's always next year.
