so wee G turns 1 in under a month, which means weaning is ON. i'm having all the same sadness i had about this phase ending that i had when weaning e. however, G won't take a bottle which has seriously impeded my ability to get out of the house for any length of time, so i have an eye on the weaning prize. so far, we have cut out his one afternoon booby "snack" - and it seems to be going well. he's has his first taste of whole milk in a sippy cup, and he is a FAN. soooo... fingers crossed.
Elliot, not to be outdone, decided it was time to potty train this week. by "decided" i mean that he started to ask for a fresh diaper immediately after soiling a diaper. i barely have time to keep up with diaper laundry as it is, so i've decided this is my cue to get this kid weaned off of diapers, if you will. the first day was a little fraught with mistakes, but now we are subscribing to "naked from the waist down" when at home, and it is going REALLY well. as long as we have his favorite potty with us (he won't use the extra one that was given to us) he just scoots his little hiney over there and uses it when he needs to. brilliance.
now, people have said that attacking boob weaning and diaper weaning at the same time is insane, but i figured we are in for a month of an extra dose of crazy around here but with the end result being a BLISSFULL month of May. i was feeling pretty good about it.
until elliot decided to stop sleeping 'til 8 in favor of waking up at 6:30... then 6... and finally, 5:30 am today.
two nights ago i was exhausted, so i went to bed "early." (i usually stay up until E gets home from work at night - whether intentionally or not- which means i end up in bed around midnight, and asleep by 12:30.) i got in bed at 11:30 and flipped off the light, skipping my usual bedtime reading. G woke up at midnight with a dirty diaper and was so upset that he cried until I calmed him down and got him back into bed at 1 AM. okay. then he woke up to nurse at 5:30 (so I'm at 4.5 hours of sleep at this point, if you are counting.) and then Elliot woke up at 6.
i immediately ordered one of those "toddler clocks" from Amazon that tells kids (either with a color indicator or picture indicator) when they are allowed to get out of bed, it will arrive tomorrow and i will report back.
i was so tired that day i felt depressed. i told E that "motherhood broke me" for the first time in 3 years.
Elliot got up at 5:30 this morning, and I spent the next hour putting him back repeatedly saying "it's dark outside, you can't get out of bed until the sun is up." which it was... by 6:30.
the toddler clock arrives tomorrow, and i can't wait.
April will be the hardest month for us, in terms of our family schedule. E is working FOUR different jobs, and I'm working 1 outside the house as well. G turns ONE (insane) so family will be in town, there will be a big party... then May. In May E is down to 2 jobs, and I will finish my outside job in the first week. Then in blissful June we will get 2 weeks off. literally off.
I'm living for June.
But first, I'm living to get through April. And I THINK I will survive. and when i do? I will have a one-year-old who no longer keeps me (and my boobs) tethered to the house, and a near-3-year-old who is out of diapers (thus reducing my cloth diaper laundry.)
fingers crossed we all survive, 'cause the grass looks a WHOLE lot greener on the May side of the calendar.
